Shahrokh Zamani, a construction worker, member of the representative
council for th “Formation of Independent Workers’ Organisations” was
incarcerated in June 2011 accused of attempting to organise workers. Following
a summary show trail he was charged with setting up workers’ organisations and
carrying out propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Mr Zamani was subsequently sentenced to
eleven years of imprisonment.
Whilst in prison the Islamic authorities have resorted to all sorts
of ploys and mistreatments to break his spirit and force him to submission.
They have moved him around, transferring him from one prison to another all
over the country and placing him in cells with hard core criminals.
Last month, in protest against such inhumane treatments Shahrokh
Zamani started a hunger strike and since then his condition has been deteriorating.
Since the inception of the Islamic Republic, any attempts on the
part of the workers to defend their wages, working condition, living standard,
the right to collective bargaining and the right to organisation, have been met
with persecution, imprisonment, torture and execution.
Even now, when the regime is talking about political and economic
opportunities for the capitalists, the oppression of the working class not only
has not eased but has intensified. In today’s Iran the capitalist’s heaven is workers’
hell.
Today those “International organisations” that in no time are up
in arms in support of the “Green” movement, have deliberately refrained from
mentioning his name let alone putting pressure on the regime to respond to Mr
Zamani’s grievances.
The abroad organisation of the Hekmatist Party while endorsing all
the efforts and actions to free Shahrokh
Zamani and all jailed workers, wholly support the activities of the “Committee
to Free Shahrokh Zamani” and the statement issued by the “International Campaign in Defence of Workers in Iran” which has now
been endorsed and signed by over 550 activists.
We will make every attempt to attract more support from the workers’
organisations, humanitarian institutions, public figures and libertarian
individuals to put pressure on the Islamic Republic to unconditionally free all
jailed workers and Shahrokh Zamani.
Shahrokh Zamani is not the first worker that has been imprisoned
and tortured, accused of fighting for the workers’ right, but he must be the
last one that the Islamic republic dares to imprison.
Free Shahrokh Zamani!
Down with Islamic Republic of Iran !
Long Live Freedom,
Equality and Worker’s Rule!
